PATNA:

Bihar police

sub-inspector Ashish Kumar Singh, who died in an encounter with a gang of dacoits in Ganga diara (riverine belt) area on border of

Khagaria

and

Bhagalpur

districts on Saturday, was cremated with full respects at his native village Saroja here in Simri Bakhtiyarpur block of

Saharsa district

on Sunday morning.

Singh, a 2009 batch SI, was posted as Pasraha police station SHO in Khagaria district. He along with his team had entered Bihpur police station area of

Naugachia

while chasing armed dacoits during the encounter before finally getting hit.

However, except a DSP rank officer, no other top cop was present during the cremation.

A villager Raj Kumar Sharma, while talking to TOI over phone, said that disaster management minister Dinesh Chandra Yadav and former JD(U) MLA Arun Yadav had reached Singh’s residence to attend his last rites.

Earlier on Saturday, ADG (Law and Order) Alok Raj had reached Khagaria and had paid last respects to the officer at district police lines.

It was not the first time that Singh had faced bullets on his face while chasing criminals.

Singh’s brother-in-law Amar Kumar while talking to TOI over phone said that the officer had earlier received gunshot injury on one of his knees while chasing criminals at Bhadas village under Mufassil police station area in Khagaria district.

“At that time he was posted as Mufassil police station SHO,” Kumar added.

His son Shauryaman Singh, seven-year-old, lit the funeral pyre of his brave father. The cremation took place just behind Singh’s residence in the village. Singh also has a daughter aged around five years.

Singh was the youngest among three brothers. His elder brother is an engineer with a private firm at Dehradun in Uttar Pradesh while another brother Rakesh Kumar Singh works with Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB).

Both of his children were residing at Siliguri in West Bengal with their mother Sarita Singh for their studies under the guardianship of their maternal uncle.
