Govt formulates new social media policy

Patna: The state govt has formulated the ‘Bihar Social Media and Other Online Media Policy, 2024' to publicise the govt policies and public welfare programmes with various social media platforms emerging as powerful tools of disseminating information. This was approved by the state cabinet on Thursday.
With the implementation of this regulation, advertising on international platforms will become easier. Major social media platforms along with websites, news portals, web media and news mobile apps will be registered under the department. Through these, information about govt welfare programmes and schemes will be conveyed to the public in an impactful and prompt manner, a press statement issued by the information and public relations department said on Friday.
Under this regulation, a minimum average user base per month will be determined for web media and eligibility for social media will be based on subscribers or followers. The authenticity of user base data will be verified based on internationally accepted and reliable third-party tools for web media and relevant platforms' analytics for social media.
Under the rule, if any media publishes content that promotes anti-national activities, anti-social or communal hatred, or contradicts govt message standards as per the Press Council of India's guidelines, then the registration of such media will be cancelled or blacklisted.
