NEW DELHI: Another person has died in Bihar's Saran district from consuming spurious liquor, bringing the total death toll to five, according to DGP Alok Raj.
The combined death count from two separate incidents in Sivan and Saran districts now stands at 25.
The DGP confirmed that 12 people have been arrested in connection with the hooch tragedy.
Saran superintendent of police Kumar Ashish reported that the alcohol involved is believed to be industrial spirit, and investigations are ongoing to trace the supply chain.
Speaking to ANI, the SP stated, "We are looking into the backward and forward linkages of the industrial spirit. Additionally, we have suspended beat police personnel.
The SHO and other officers have been questioned, and if their responses are deemed unsatisfactory, further action will be taken.
A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has also been established. In the past 24 hours, we have conducted 250 raids and seized 1,650 liters of illicit alcohol in the district."
Saran district magistrate Aman Samir added that the families of the deceased will need to pledge their support for the state government’s liquor ban.
He noted, "If the post-mortem report meets the necessary conditions, an ex-gratia payment of Rs 4 lakh will be provided to each family."
Bihar CM Nitish Kumar has conducted a high-level review of the situation and directed the secretary of the prohibition, excise, and registration department to visit the site for a thorough investigation.
