BHAGALPUR: Aimed to increase literacy and better the chances for the prisoners' futures, an extremely ambitious edification programme has been initiated at two jails in Bhagalpur district.
Jail administration and directorate of mass education are jointly conducting this programme named 'Prerna.'
'Prerna' aims to educate the prisoners so that they can fit-into the mainstream society post a period of partial isolation.

Statistically, it aims to educate 750 jail inmates, which includes 50 to 60 women, by January 2012.
400 prisoners from the special central jail and 350 inmates from Saheed Jubba Sahni central jail have been selected under this Bihar state government scheme.
Seven literacy centers with a capacity of 50 prisoners each have already been set-up, ready with reading and writing material for the inmates. Efforts are underway to enrich the jail library with various kinds of informative books besides the ones required for the programme, said jail sources also adding that state government has earmarked sufficient funds for the plan.
A group of literate prisoners, who have finished training for the program, will be acting as teachers (christened as 'Swayam Sevaks') and conduct classes for their fellow inmates. They will be paid token remunerations for their services. Further, the inmates who take these classes will then be eligible to take board examinations at government schools and stand a chance at being awarded the certificate.

It is worth a mention that out of 30,000 prisoners lodged in 55 jails across Bihar, only 9,000 are still illiterate.
"It truly is a reformative plan for the jailed inmates", said Jitendra Kumar, the jail superintendent, of special central jail. He also said that training to the resource persons has
been imparted and the programme is ready to begin.
"Education brings positive transformation in people and jailed inmates would not only be transformed by education, but also be made capable to carry on their lives in the social mainstream with optimism post their release from prison," added the jail superintendent.
