Bank employee loses job due to poor English
PATNA: A fourth grade employee of a nationalized Bank has lost his job because he is was not competent in English.
Prashuram Singh, who is a daily wage worker, eked out his living at More Branch of Indian Bank at Mokama situated 94 km away from Patna. Singh had been working there for the past 25 years.
The reason behind his laying off was that he was unable to write digits in English, a desirable skill in all Indian banks.

"Writing digits in Roman script in a bank is a must. Enormous problems can arise from a single digit difference," reasoned bank manager Narendra Paswan.
In order to enable Mokama resident Prashuram Singh to earn his bread and butter and bring his life back on track, Bap Society, a Patna based NGO has come forward with an offer to train him in English skills free of cost.
For this purpose 'Bap society' has made an arrangement with British Lingua, an English skills training institute of national repute well known for its motto 'English for all'.
"I will extend all possible help to Prashuram to learn English and live a dignified life," said British Lingua managing director Dr Birbal Jha.
"The bank manager should have made an arrangement for Prushuram to gain the required skills in English instead of laying him off and leaving him in the lurch", said Jha.

Under the leadership of noted author Birbal Jha, 'Bap Society' is launching a statewide English Literacy Mission in order to make people aware of today's need for English and keep pace with the times. "The up and coming generations in Bihar must not face a similar situation to Prashuram.
For this, those with the required skills in English and other key subjects must pass them on, it is their national and civic duty to come forward and take up the cudgel of contributing to society by enabling others," said Jha.
