Aurangabad: Unidentified assailants shot dead a 35-year-old chemist in Aurangabad on Friday night.
To protest the killing, traders shut down their shops on Saturday. Locals alleged that there was a complete lack of police patrolling at key entry points, major intersections and market areas, which allowed the attackers to escape easily.
Three motorcycle-borne criminals shot Junaid Ahmad, owner of a medicine shop at Nawadih More on the old GT Road, around 9.45pm while he was standing near a kiosk after closing his shop.
Junaid sustained four bullet injuries and was rushed to Aurangabad Sadar Hospital. Given his serious condition, doctors referred him to Narayan Medical College and Hospital in Sasaram, but he succumbed to his injuries on the way to the medical facility.
SP Ambrish Rahul said an FIR was registered at Nagar police station (case no. 90/26) on the basis of the statement of the deceased’s brother, Zubair Ahmad. The complaint named seven accused, alleging that they conspired to kill Junaid by hiring shooters.
“Considering the seriousness of the case, a special investigation team (SIT) has been constituted under the leadership of SDPO Sadar-1. Based on CCTV footage analysis, technical inputs and intelligence gathering, one accused has been arrested,” the SP said, adding that raids are going on to nab the remaining accused.
Preliminary investigation suggests that the murder was the result of an old rivalry, police said.
