AURANGABAD

: Keeping the chaotic traffic situation of the town in view, the district administration has initiated a move to relocate the roadside vendors here.

Small tea stalls, vegetable and fruit vendors and petty shops dotting the roads of the town are major cause of snarls and hence the district administration is making a bid to identify no-vending zones so that traffic movement can be smooth, said sources here on Wednesday.

The decision was taken following frequent traffic jams from

Ramesh Chowk

to

Dharamsala Mor

causing hardship to commuters. Even ambulances often get stucked up on this stretch due to heavy traffic jams. However, identifying no-vending zone is definitely an uphill task, said sources in the district administration.

In the past also, the administration did make an attempt to get rid of encroachments but did not succeed due to strong opposition from the vendors.

Taking serious note of the problem, DM

Kanwal Tanuj

on Wednesday called a meeting of nagar parishad officials and asked them to identify no-vending zones in the town area.

The district administration has also decided to shift the old vegetable market which is said to be the main reason behind frequent traffic congestion in the town to a vacant plot of the district board. "Officials concerned have been directed to shift the market," said the DM.

The

DM

said he has also directed the representatives of various vendor associations to shift the market to the newly-identified place. "The decision has been taken in the larger interest of the people," said Tanuj.

The residents of the city have also expressed hopefulness that relocation of vendors will ease traffic movement on roads.

It may be noted that the district police have already sent a proposal to the headquarters to set up a separate traffic police station with a view to making traffic smooth.
