App to detect crop diseases
Bhagalpur: With the aim to detect crop diseases and related problems along with finding their remedies, the Indian Institute of Information Technology at Bhagalpur (IIIT-Bhagalpur) and Bihar Agricultural University (BAU) have collaborated to develop an innovative mobile application for the benefit of farmers. It has been christened as ‘e-Nirog’ mobile app.Unlike the conventional method of detection of plant/crop diseases by using manual observation of the disease symptoms present on parts of plants, the e-Nirog app uses Artificial Intelligence (AI). The e-Nirog app on farmers’ mobile phones enables them to detect plant/crop diseases and find remedies for them. The AI-powered app can also determine soil and crop health, besides providing fertilizer and nutrients’ recommendations, monitor weather etc, enabling the farmers to make better decisions and do efficient farming.IIIT-Bhagalpur director Prof Arvind Choubey said the agriculture sector has a pivotal role in the development of a country along with uplifting the socio-economic conditions of farmers. However, crop/plant diseases can harm the entire crops and may lead to food scarcity, starvation and several related problems. to humanity, The AI-based e-Nirog app promises to play a vital role in crop/plant disease detection. The app has been designed and developed for farmers by IIIT-B as per the BAU specifications under the climate-friendly farming plan to figure out a large number of problems in the field of agriculture, added Prof Choubey.Elaborating on the e-Nirog app, Prof Choubey said farmers have to install the e-Nirog app on their mobile phones and get their details registered, followed by clicking photos from the mobile phone camera and then uploading details of the crop/plant and diseases/problems through the app for results. The disease of the crop/plant and its solutions will be instantly communicated on the farmers’ mobile phone through WhatsApp, added the IIIT-B director. D R Singh, BAU VC, said the agriculture sector is vital for feeding people and cattle. E-Nirog app helps diagnose the crop/plant diseases and in finding their remedies instantly, so that suitable pesticides/chemicals can be used to stem the diseases for better agricultural yields, which will improve farmers’ social and economic conditions.
