PATNA: The Patna district administration on Wednesday demolished 25 houses built on encroached land at Dom Toli near the Yarpur overbridge. Infuriated over the anti-encroachment drive launched by the district administration, the affected people pelted the police and district administration officials with stones. The police retaliated by bursting tear-gas shells. When Rani Devi took a loan from the government to build her house two years ago, little did she know that her dream house would be destroyed right in front of her eyes.
With the responsibility of three unmarried daughters on her shoulders, she doesnt know how shell continue her life. This is one story among the many families of Dom Toli that became homeless in the anti-encroachment drive.
The officials said they had intimated the residents about their operation. But the people of the area have another story to tell... ...Hum logon ko to bola gaya tha ki kewal road ke paas ka saamaan hataaya jaayega, par aaj to hamaara ghar hi khatam ho gaya. Ab hum saamaan le kar kahan jaayenge? said Savita, a resident whose eyes were constantly searching her belongings which got scattered in the operation. Another woman, Kanta Devi, pleaded with a Patna Municipal Corporation official to undertake the operation on Thursday, saying, Hamaara saara saamaan bikhra hua hai babu, kidhar jaayenge? But, the official just told her that information had already been given to them. Some of the residents maintained that they had staged a dharna outside the secretariat a few days back. Nitish Kumar ne kaha tha ki pehle zameen milegi, phir makaan tootenge, said a resident.District magistrate B Rajinder said intimation about the drive had been given to the people of the area on December 9. Rehabilitation will be done in genuine cases, he added.
