PATNA: Govind Singh, an accused in a fraud case worth over Rs 14 lakh, who escaped from police custody after his associates shot a constable, R K Rai, on the Patna Civil Court premises on Thursday, has many aliases.
He is known by a number of names at different places and to different people. Among various names used by him are K K Jain, A K Jain, Kamlesh Kumar and Kamlesh Kumar Singh.
Originally a resident of Ajamgarh (Uttar Pradesh), he has a long history of forgery and escape from police custody.
Singh is known to have committed fraud on a number of persons at different places in the country, including at Bokaro (Jharkhand), Nagpur (Maharashtra), Raipur (Chhattisgarh), Varanasi (Uttar Pradesh) and Goa. According to sources, earlier, he managed to escape from police custody in Goa by bribing the officials on duty.
The sources said he has a daughter and a son. The son is settled in America and the daughter is an air-hostess. He also owns two flats at Andheri, West Mumbai.
Singh was produced by the police from Beur Central Jail in a case of forgery (RC 6 (S)\2000) in the court of sub-divisional judicial magistrate S K Pandey. He was accused of cheating H K Choudhary, the director of Vishnu Agarwal N N Ispat Limited, Bhilai, Madhya Pradesh. He met Choudhary as a representative of Hindustan Tank Factory, Danapur, Patna, on April 23, 1999.
There he placed an order for steel plates worth Rs 14,05,552. At the time of payment, he showed the original draft, and at the time of handing over the envelope he changed it.
When the envelope was opened again, it contained a postal order worth Rs 10 and some other papers.
Before being brought to the Beur jail on May 29, 2001, Singh was in Nagpur Central Jail in another case.
According to the sources, he managed to escape from the court with help of two other persons on a two-wheeler.
