6.4% more women voted than men: EC

Patna: As much as 6.4% more women voted in Bihar in the just concluded Lok Sabha polls than men, according to the Election Commission data released on Monday. The overall turnout of Bihar women was 59.39%, while that of the men was 53.28%.
While the women were near their 2019 turnout of 59.59%, the voting percentage of men decreased from 55.12% from last LS polls.
The LS elections in Bihar this time were held in seven phases that started from April 19 and ended on June 1.
Barring the first and last phases, five others saw women’s voting percentage more than men.
The turnout of women was 6.21% more than men in the second phase, 11.64% in the third round, 8% more in the fourth, 9.16% and 11% more in the fifth and sixth phases, respectively.
In the first phase, when Aurangabad, Gaya, Nawada and Jamui went to polls, the turnout of men was 49.59% as compared to women’s 48.9%.
Second phase onwards, the women’s voting percentage started going up. On April 26 when Kishanganj, Katihar, Purnia, Bhagalpur and Banka voted, the women’s turnout increased to 62.73% as compared to men’s 56.41%.
In the third phase of polls in Jhanjharpur, Supaul, Araria, Madhepura and Khagaria seats on May 7, 65.2% women voted as compared to 53.57% men.
In the fourth phase, when Darbhanga, Ujiarpur, Samastipur, Begusarai and Munger voted on May 13, the turnout of women was 62.47%, while men’s was 54.39%.
In the fifth phase of polls in Sitamarhi, Madhubani, Saran, Muzaffarpur and Hajipur on May 20, women’s voting percentage was 61.58%, while men’s was 52.42%.
Similarly in the penultimate phase of polls in Valmikinagar, Paschim Champaran and Purvi Champaran, Sheohar, Vaishali, Gopalganj, Siwan and Maharajganj, 62.95% women turned out to vote, as compared to just 51.95% men.
In the last phase, when both seats in capital Patna voted, the turnout of men and women was almost similar. While 52.42% women turned out in Nalanda, Patna Sahib, Patliputra, Ara, Buxar, Sasaram, Karakat and Jehanabad, the men’s voting percentage was tad better at 54.09%.
Political analysts feel now women are seeking more say in governance.

Lok Sabha polls: Percentage wise, phase 4 records highest voter turnout, phase 5 lowest

The fourth phase of Lok Sabha elections had the highest voter turnout at 69.16%, while the fifth phase had the lowest at 62.20%. The Election Commission released the phase six turnout figures with 63.37% recorded on May 25.
