: Four police constables have been suspended for their alleged involvement in a road robbery.

The constables, while on patrol beat, are alleged to have robbed two schoolteachers of Rs 5,500. The incident took place in Sevanagar locality of Gaya town around 10pm on Friday. The victims have been identified as Damodar Singh and Jitendra Singh.

Sources said the policemen allegedly stopped the schoolteachers on the alibi of examining the driving licence and other vehicle-related documents of the their bike. The policemen then allegedly relieved them of their cash. An FIR has been lodged in this connection in the Civil Lines police station. Earlier, an identification parade was held and the victims identified the constables. SSP Garima Malik said on Saturday further action would be taken in accordance with the Indian Penal Code and the service code. Asked whether the policemen would be arrested, the SSP said such a decision would be taken after proper study of the contents of the FIR.

Meanwhile, pressure is reportedly mounting on senior officials to dilute the charges against the constables. When contacted zonal IG

said he had not been informed about the incident by Gaya officials. He would a seek a report and see to it that justice was done in the matter. "Leniency will not be shown if the constables are found guilty," said the IG.
