'3rd umpire should be consulted more often'

PATNA: "Doping is just impossible in a game like cricket because to lift 100 kg weight and to bowl at the speed of 100 kmph are two entirely different things altogether," said the former off-spinner Shiv Lal Yadav, who had taken 24 wickets in his debut series against the Australian team led by Kim Hughes in 1979.

he said that if a bowler took steroids, he would have to take it almost every over. talking with the times of india on thursday, he shared some of his ideas for the development of the game. excerpts: q: recently, during the england-pakistan test series, england blamed poor umpiring for their defeat. is not it high time that the third umpire played a bigger role in the game and field umpires' responsibilities were reduced? a: no, we can't do that because there are still some kind of decisions which can not be given with the help of tv cameras. for instance, the lbw (leg before wicket) decision. however, field umpires should not take any decision on their own. when they have been given the third umpire for assistance, they must seek his help more frequently. q:pakistan have produced so many quality fast bowlers. why have we not been able to do so? a:look, there is a lot of difference between the pakistani system and ours. in pakistan, the officials concerned just move around in search of talent. they can directly include anybody in the national side whoever they find talented. but in a country like india, that can't be done. we have a chain and step-by-step system and the players have to perform at every stage such as under-12, 14, 19 etc. q:doesn't this mean the pakistani system is better? a:no, i wouldn't say that. that system could be good for a relatively small country like pakistan but not for a big country like india. if our selectors start travelling to scout for talent, they won't be able to finish even a single zone in one cricketing season. but then, the bcci could try something like providing assistant selectors to our five selectors. q:recently, the indian team has been losing the finals. is our team in need of any psychological training? a:no, certainly not. our team is undoubtedly doing its best under the conditions.
