PATNA/MUZAFFARPUR: A mob attacked a police station in
Darbhanga
district, pelted it with stones and tried to set it ablaze in protest against the murder of a petrol pump owner’s son, who was robbed of Rs 6 lakh and shot dead on Monday. He is among three businessmen from three districts — Madhubani, Vaishali and
Samastipur
— murdered in a span of 24 hours.
The mob attack on Raiyam police station in Darbhanga district was prompted by the murder of Dhananjay Kumar Jha in neighbouring Madhubani district around 11.30 am while he was on his way to deposit Rs 6 lakh at a bank from his petrol pump under Sakri police station area. Jha was intercepted by four armed criminals on motorbikes, who shot him and fled with the cash. The injured was rushed to a private hospital at Sakri where he died during treatment.
As the news of Jha’s death spread , a large number of people gathered outside Raiyam police station (in Darbhanga district), which is at a stone’s throw from the murder site, and ransacked it. When police tried to intervene, they were pelted with stones. The mob, which swelled to over 1,000 people, also made an abortive bid to torch the building of the police station.
Darbhanga SSP Babu Ram, however, claimed the police neither used any force nor opened fire in self-defence to disperse the rampaging mob. “Our men showed ample patience and pacified the protestors, who dispersed after a while. Though the incident took place under Sakri police station area in Madhubani district, the mob targeted the Reyam police station in Darbhanga district,” Ram said.
Madhubani Sadar SDPO Kamili Bala said the cops at Raiyam police station faced the mob fury as it was close to the murder site. “A section of protestors, who had blocked the road and disrupted vehicular traffic, attacked the nearby police station as a mark of protest over the loot-cum-murder,” the SDPO said, adding raids were on to nab the culprits. In Patna, the police recovered the body of the 50-year-old businessman Pankaj Kumar from a deserted place adjacent to the NH-30 late on Sunday night. Police said prima facie it appeared that Pankaj, a resident of Hajipur in Vaishali district, was attacked with sticks and hard blunt substance causing grievous injuries, which led to his death.
Land dispute is stated to be the reason behind the murder, police sources said. The body was handed over to the family after post mortem at the NMCH on Monday. In another incident, the Muzaffarpur police recovered the body of a fish trader Ram Sagar Sah from premises of the Bazar Samiti under the Ahiyapur police station on Monday morning. Sah, a resident of Tajpur in neighbouring Samastipur district, had come to Muzaffarpur for business purposes.
The deceased’s son Rohit told the police that his father had left home for Muzaffarpur to purchase fish from the Bazar Samiti. He was carrying Rs.25,000 with him for the purpose. “What happened with him is a matter of police investigation,” Rohit said. Muzaffarpur DSP (Sadar) Ram Naresh Paswan said police reached the Bazar Samiti after getting information about a man lying in an unconscious state early in the morning on Monday. The victim was rushed to the SKMCH where he was declared brought dead by the doctors.
