: At a time when the country endeavours to 'save the girl child' and create awareness about gender equality, a mother of two minor girls was killed after frequent torture over the years by her husband and in-laws. Her only 'mistake' was that she had twice given birth to girl child, whereas the family wanted a 'chiraag of khandaan (a son)' from her.

police station area in Banka district, was married to Binod Yadav of Kumharbak village under Jaipur police station are of Katoria block in Banka district a few years ago. Rekha gave birth to two girl children consecutively. Rekha was subjected to torture and thrashing when she gave birth to her first daughter and subsequently her ordeal increased after the delivery of second girl.
Police sources said on Friday afternoon, Rekha was allegedly brutally assaulted by her in-laws and husband. When she fell unconscious, the in-laws and husband panicked and escaped after locking their house, fearing Rekha's death. The neighbours later informed the Jaipur police station.
Jaipur police outpost SHO Murari Kumar reached the spot along with police team and broke open the house to recover Rekha's body. Prima facie, it appeared to be a case of death by brutal assault, he said, adding, "We have sent the body for postmortem." The victim's brother has lodged a named FIR against six persons, including her in-laws, said the SHO, adding the accused are absconding. "We will arrest the accused soon," he added.
