Patna: A 33-year-old bus conductor from Madhya Pradesh died and nine passengers of the vehicle were injured after it was hit by a truck on National Highway-19 in Durgawati police station area of Kaimur district late on Monday night.
The bus was carrying 38 pilgrims —14 women and 24 men — from Madhya Pradesh to Gaya via Varanasi for Pitripaksh rituals. The dumper truck, which was moving ahead of the bus, suddenly pushed its brake and turned into a service lane after descending the Mahuaria overbridge, causing the collision, said bus driver Dharmendra Sharma.
The NHAI patrolling team soon arrived at the spot with an ambulance and two cranes. It took an hour to extricate the deceased conductor from the wreckage, and restore traffic.
The local police, led by sub-inspector Ajit Kumar, took custody of the body and sent it to Sadar Hospital, Bhabua, for a postmortem. “The deceased bus conductor, Mahesh Verma, was a resident of Maheshwar village in Khargone district of MP. An investigation has been started into the accident,” he said, adding the truck driver fled toward the industrial area leaving the vehicle. The police are searching for him, and checking the CCTV camera footage of nearby areas, said the SI.
All the injured pilgrims — Narendra Kumar (72), Champalal Parihar (55), Kharchijan Seth (22), Shakuntala Seth (60), Ramesh Kumar (53), Anita Yadav (45), Balram Kewat (48), Sanjay Kumar (51) and Rajesh Kumar (40) — were brought to the community health centre by the NHAI ambulance for first aid.
A replacement bus was arranged to transport the pilgrims to Gaya, said Sharma.
