NOIDA: A 33-year-old woman on her way to hospital delivered a baby on a road at Pari Chowk with the help of two nurses, who were passing by and rushed to her aid.
Jyoti (28) and Renu Devi, nurses at Sharda Hospital, were on their way to work around 9.30am on Tuesday when they saw Roshni Sharma lying on the road in pain and her husband Prashant, a tailor, seeking help from the passersby.
Renu said she was in an auto-rickshaw when she saw a crowd and realised there was no time to take Roshni to the hospital.
"I called Jyoti, who was also leaving for work at that time. We told the crowd gathered at the site that we were nurses. We got a shawl and with the help of another woman, a passerby, we helped Roshni deliver her baby," Renu, who has been working at the Greater Noida hospital for five years, said.
The newborn boy was wrapped in a jacket and taken to the hospital. Doctors said mother and son were doing fine.
"Both the mother and baby are healthy. Roshni was being treated at a hospital in Kasna, but she was told to get a C-section delivery. In the morning, she went into labour and fell on the road on the way," said Dr Ajit Kumar, director of public relations at Sharda hospital.
Roshni, a resident of Luksar, said she was grateful to the nurses for their help.
"They are like God to us. They saved our lives. My husband kept asking for help from everyone there, but no one came forward. I can never repay what the nurses have done for me," the mother of two children said.
Sharda University chancellor PK Gupta said the hospital was treating Roshni free of cost. "Both the nurses are being awarded Rs 5,100 each for helping the woman," he added.
