Shady call centre in Noida: Conmen used net calls to trap foreigners

NOIDA: A day after a resident of

Shahdara

in Delhi, who once worked with a Gurgaon-based BPO and later started a sham operation in Sector 63, Noida, was arrested for allegedly cheating hundreds of citizens of

Canada

and other countries, cops have found that the accused and his accomplices were using the X-lite Softphone app for calling up the foreigners via VoIP (Voice over

Internet Protocol

). The software allowed them to mask their calls.

After arresting main accused Sahil Verma on Thursday, cops have launched a search for his accomplice Bakul (30) and a woman, Sahira. While Bakul, a resident of Rohini, was responsible for sourcing and sharing data of foreign nationals with multiple call centres, Sahira is under the scanner for being a long-term accomplice of Verma.

Inspector Zahir Khan of Noida's Centre for Cyber Crime Investigation (CCCI) told TOI that Bakul had gone missing after after being alerted about Sahil's arrest.
