Protests after postal fraud

: Nearly five months after a postmaster in Dankaur was arrested for allegedly diverting people’s money into his own account and not updating the logbook, a group of residents held a protest demanding refund of their money. They kept officials at the Dankaur post-office, including an assistant superintendent, hostage for hours.

The protest started in the afternoon, when victims of the

fraud

flocked to the post-office and disrupted work. Later, they sat on a dharna and confined the ASP, KP Singh, to a room. He, along with the other officials, was rescued after an hour when police intervened.

“The protest was called off after they were assured of an investigation. Officials said the recovery of the funds is expected to be completed in less than a month,” said Samresh Kumar Singh, the SHO of Dankaur police station. Kaushal Singh, a post-office inspector of north sub-division, had accused then post-master Praveen Singh of diverting funds meant for the government into his own account. The allegations were found to be true after the logbooks were checked.
