Noida: As many as 589 people have been arrested for drinking at public places, police said on Friday.
In a statement, the Gautam Budh Nagar police said the arrests were made under a one-day drive conducted in different areas of Noida and Greater Noida. The offenders were held for creating nuisance at public places.
“We had information that people gather near different markets every evening to have drinks there.
The offenders were booked under Section 290 (public nuisance) of IPC. They were brought to the nearest police stations and granted bail after being issued a challan,” said Elamaran G, additional DCP (central).
Ranvijay Singh, additional DCP (Noida) said they carry out such drives outside liquor shops and other public places regularly.
“The latest drive was to send a message to the people that drinking at public places is illegal,” he added.
