Man wrongly held in drug case, alleges kin

NOIDA: Nearly a week after a 40-year-old man was arrested in a decade-old case of illegal possession of

drugs

, his family members alleged that he was

wrongly arrested

.

Uday Prakash, a painter, was arrested from his shanty in Sector 17 on July 18 and produced in court which sent him to judicial custody. Later he was released bail on July 24.

Vimla, Prakash’s wife, said a police team visited their house on July 18 and arrested her husband, saying he was wanted for illegal possession of 250gm of ganja. A case had allegedly been filed against him in 2005 under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.

“We had no information about the case. We did not receive any notice or summons in the past. They just arrested my husband, produced him and sent him to judicial custody,” she told TOI.

The next hearing is scheduled for August 10.

According to the accused’s family, they have wrongly arrested him as the man named in the FIR is not Uday Prakash but another Uday, a neighbour. Vimla said she knew the actual accused and could take the police to him.

Meanwhile, the police said they had a warrant issued against the accused from the district and sessions court in Surajpur.

Anil Kumar Shahi, SHO, Sector 20 police station, said that he was out of station and he had no information about the matter. “If there is such a complaint, we will get the matter investigated,” Shahi said.
