“We received information about a man posing as a constable and extorting money from shopkeepers and vendors. None of the shopkeepers or vendors had approached the police with a complaint, as they believed the imposter was a real cop. We laid a trap and arrested the suspect, Sukhwant Singh Dalal, from the Alpha-2 roundabout on Sunday evening. He was in a police uniform,” said Vinod Mishra, the Station House Officer of Sector Beta-2 police station.

During questioning, Dalal told the police he comes from Bulandshahr to Greater Noida once or twice a week to extort money from shopkeepers and vendors by instilling fear in them.

Police have seized the uniform, Rs 1,200 in cash and three mobile phones from Dalal. He was booked under Indian Penal Code sections 171 (wearing garb or carrying a token used by a public servant with fraudulent intent) and 384 (extortion).

The district court sent the accused to judicial custody on Monday.
