GNIDA starts door-to-door waste collection in Badalpur

Noida: Greater Noida Industrial Development Authority (GNIDA) extended its door-to-door garbage collection programme to Badalpur village to make it a zero-waste and self-reliant village. The Authority is carrying out the project with the help of an NGO.GNIDA collects waste from Alpha I and II, Beta I and II, Gamma I and II, and Rampur Jagir and Nawada villages.
Before the launch of this programme, the villagers managed the waste themselves. They would often dump the waste in open pits and on the roadside. Officials said the waste will now be collected regularly from every household, putting an end to open dumping and improving cleanliness and sanitation."At a meeting between the health department and NGO Feedback Foundation, it was decided that the dry waste collected from the village will be segregated at the village's material recovery facility (MRF) and recycled. This will reduce the volume of waste and enable the production of useful items from it," the Authority ACEO Srilakshmi VS said.Feedback Foundation works for sustainable solutions across rural and urban areas. It uses a community engagement approach and provides capacity building, planning and implementation support to various public and private agencies. It has undertaken various field activities on sanitation and waste management in Greater Noida.The ACEO added that public participation is essential to make Badalpur a zero-waste village. "To achieve this, a team from the NGO has made door-to-door visits, encouraging residents to segregate waste," she said. With an estimated population of 10 to 12 lakh, Greater Noida faces challenges in managing solid waste across its 95 sectors and 124 villages. The city generates about 500 tonnes of solid waste a day. It is directed to a dumpsite in Lakhnawali village, where lakhs of tonnes of legacy waste have been lying untreated for years.
