GREATER NOIDA

: In a major blow to the dreaded Sanjay Momnathal gang, police have arrested the gangster’s son Sonu and his two accomplices in Gulawali village for illegal sand

mining

. Acting on a tip-off that some workers had been hired by the gang to load illegally mined sand on two trucks on the banks of the Yamuna river, a special team from the

Knowledge Park police station

raided the area on Wednesday evening.

Varun Pawar

, SO, Knowledge Park, said, “The team raided the spot on Wednesday evening and secretly made a video of the accused overseeing the loading of sand in the trucks before carrying out the arrests. The workers were released later, but the three — Sonu, Ram Kumar and Sanjay — have been taken into custody. Two trucks, a car and pistol have been recovered from them.

Pawar said Sonu was wanted in six cases lodged under the Gangster Act,

Goonda Act

and several other sections of IPC. “Recently, his father and other gang members were named in a case of extortion. They had helped a local resident in coercing a Gurgaon-based businessmen to give away part of his land that he had bought a few years ago for setting up a factory,” he said.

A fresh FIR has been lodged against the arrested trio under sections 379 (theft), 411 (dishonestly receiving stolen property) of IPC and under the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act, 1957. “They were produced in a court on Thursday, and sent to judicial custody,” Pawar said.

Sanjay Momnathal is, however, on the run.
