NOIDA: Four persons, including two women, have been arrested for cheating hundreds of people on the pretext of reviving their lapsed insurance policies, police said on Thursday.
The accused, including Ghaziabad resident Shobhit Gupta and Delhi residents
Islam Khan, Bharti Rajput and Preeti, all aged below 35 years, were operating for the past six months, police said.
“We received a tip-off that the gang was operating out of a building in Sector 18 commercial hub. A police team raided the office and nabbed the four people from there,” Ranvijay Singh, the additional deputy commissioner of police (ADCP), said. Cops have recovered eight mobile phones, two laptops, two pen drives, three debit cards and Rs 50,000 cash from the possession of the arrested persons.
“During questioning, it was found that the accused had cheated several people on pretext of reviving their lapsed insurance policies. They would procure data of people whose policies had lapsed and then contact them over phone to trap gullible people into transferring money to them in the name of various fees,” Singh added.
The four have been booked under IPC Sections 406 (criminal breach of trust) and 420 (cheating). “We suspect they have cheated hundreds of people. We’re trying to get in touch with those whom the gang members had contacted,” said
Manoj Kumar, SHO of Sector 20.
