According to experts, the wind speed, which is linked with the pollutants in the air and determines how quickly they are dispersed, is likely to improve from Wednesday.

Strong winds can help transport pollutants over a wider area.

Dr Gufran Beig, Project Director, SAFAR (System of Air Quality Weather Forecasting and Research) - Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, Pune, told TOI that the wind speed is likely to improve from Wednesday, resulting in improvement in visibility.

“For the past few days, the wind speed over Delhi-NCR region has been less than one kilometre/hour. However, it is likely to improve by Wednesday,” he said.

He said that the direction of the wind is also likely to undergo a change in the coming days.

“As of now, the direction of the winds blowing over NCR is North-west but it is likely that the north-easterly winds start blowing within a few days,” Beig said.

This will make the Himalayan winds blowing towards Delhi side blow towards the north-east, resulting in respite in the area here.

On Monday, the wind speed was maintained at less than one kilometre/hour in the morning but fluctuated between 10-16 kilometer/hour during the afternoon and the evening.

Both PM 2.5 and PM 10 levels, according to SAFAR, were “severe” on Monday and its forecast for Tuesday suggests no change.
