NOIDA: A businessman was duped of Rs 20 lakh by two men who identified themselves as a police and an income tax officer on Tuesday. The man had come to Noida to exchange his new currency notes with old currency notes that amounted to a higher value.
Vikas Vashisht who runs a construction business in Delhi, was introduced to Lalit Wadhwa by an SBI clerk. Wadhwa, who owns a beverage company in Noida, told Vashisht that he had a huge number of old currency notes and was willing to exchange with the new ones. Hence, the duo agreed for a deal to exchange new notes worth Rs 20 lakh with old notes amounting to Rs 24 lakh.
On Tuesday, when Vashisht visited Wadhwa at his office in Noida, Sector 6, two persons entered the room and started questioning them about the money. “One of them had worn a police dress and looked like a sub-inspector. The other identified himself as an income tax officer,” Vashisht told police. The two of them termed the transaction illegal and immediately seized the money.
Vashisht later realised that he was duped and lodged a complaint of cheating against Wadhwa and the two persons at Sector 20 Police station.
“We have detained Lalit Wadhwa and the clerk who introduced him to Vashisht. Primary investigation shows that the police officer involved in the (false) raid is working with Ghaziabad Police. The person who identified himself as an income tax officer has not yet been identified,” said a police officer.
