Barricades up, Noida plans CCTVs in Sector 150 weeks after techie death
Noida: Two weeks after 27-year-old Yuvraj Mehta's car plunged into an unbarricaded trench, exposing glaring safety lapses and infrastructure gaps in a residential area still dotted with unfinished construction sites, Noida Authority announced a plan to install a CCTV network across Sector 150, even as it has fenced the accident site.
Conceived as a low-density sports city, the sector is home to over 10,000 residents across a dozen societies. Residents said large stretches in the sector had remained dug-up, poorly lit, and largely unmonitored for years, with no barricades, reflectors, or warning signs near abandoned pits—lapses that were exposed when Mehta's car plunged into a 30-foot, unsecured trench while negotiating a right-angle turn near ATS Le Grandiose. They also claimed construction debris, broken shoulders and a lack of signage made driving difficult and risky.
Officials said the CCTV network sought to address both monitoring and safety gaps. A joint team of engineers and traffic officials would map vulnerable stretches and identify the riskiest zones, determine how many cameras were needed and where they should be placed to improve surveillance and road safety.
The cameras would subsequently be linked to Noida's Integrated Smart Traffic Management System (ISTMS). Already active at 82 locations with more than 1,000 zoom cameras, the system captures traffic violations for e-challans and aids police in accident and crime investigations.
Once integrated, Sector 150 roads would be monitored in real time from the central control room in Sector 94, officials said.
Officials said the CCTV network would act both as a monitoring tool and a deterrent against rash driving or unauthorised entry into construction zones.
"The goal is to plug engineering and oversight gaps," an official said.
For immediate safety measures, barricades have also been erected to prevent vehicles from driving straight into the trench near the sharp turn leading to the trench. Reflective road studs, additional reflectors, and improved lighting have been installed to make the curve more visible at night.
The move comes after a citywide exercise that identified 65 accident-prone black spots—15 to be addressed by the Authority and 50 by developers.
