NAVI MUMBAI: As many as 250 women protested against the arrest of two men, Pritam Koli (35) and Dinesh Koli (19), who were allegedly involved in the Mora riot on Friday.
The cops, to keep things under control, had increased police bandobast across the area.
“A total of 16 men are accused in the riot. We have arrested two of them and are looking for the others, which is why the bandobast,” said a police officer.
But the villagers say that the cops had attacked them and the riot was a result of the police’s heavy-handed behaviour.
The police had gone to a Navratri venue to stop the music being played beyond the stipulated deadline of 12 am. The cops said that they had asked the villagers to shut the music and bring the party to a halt as it was 2.30am and the midnight deadline had passed. The villagers, cops said, didn’t seem to agree with them.
The villagers pelted the police jeep with stones shattering the windshield. A few stones also hit the constables on duty who suffered minor injuries.
