Vashi neta roots for dual flushing in loos
NAVI MUMBAI: The looming threat of water scarcity has got everyone thinking of ways to save the precious resource. Joining the think-tank is Vashi corporator Kishor Patkar, who has tabled a proposal for the upcoming general body meeting, to make it mandatory for new constructions to have dual toilet flushing system.
“The regular water flush tank in toilets uses up approximately 12 to 13 litres of water, regardless of the amount required,” said Patkar.

According to his estimate, this simple change of practice can result in saving over 3crore litres of water.
Town planning experts, however feel that the proposal will be better implemented by modifying development control plan. “It is a sound proposal but cannot be enforced upon by NMMC. Instead, it can be implemented by amending the development control regulations under Sector 37 of MRTP Act. There is a provision whereby minor modifications to the development plan can be done and public opinion can be sought, “said former Cidco chief architect and planner (planning) Arun Mhaisalkar.
Some experts stressed on doing away with potable water at toilets. “If the issue is about conserving water then the focus should be to use treated water for flushing and gardening,” said former chief planner MMRDA Kedarnath Ghorpade.
