Navi Mumbai: The New Panvel police arrested two men from Mahodar village in Panvel taluka on Friday for allegedly killing a woman and injuring her mother over a property dispute.
The arrested men, Kailash Pawar (30) and Pandhari Pawar (28), and the deceased, Surekha Bhagat (36) and her injured mother Neerabai (58), stay in the same village.
Senior inspector Surendranath Deshmukh said, “On Friday, the duo barged in the hut while the two women were sleeping, assaulted them with planks and fled.
As the two women did not open their shop, the villagers informed Neerabai’s daughter-in-law, who found the two women lying in a pool of blood.”
They were rushed to MGM hospital in Kamothe, where Surekha was declared brought dead, while Neerabai was unconscious. She gained consciousness for 15-20 minutes and revealed that the Pawar brothers had assaulted them.
SPI Deshmukh said that there is a dispute between the two families over a parcel of land. The Bhagats had built a house on the land which belonged to the grampanchayat. However, Pawars claimed that the land belonged to them and destroyed the Bhagats’ house.
The Bhagat women, Neerabai and Surekha, were unwilling to give up the land and had built a hut there. Neerabai’s husband and son had left the village as they did not want to pursue the matter.
Deshmukh added the complaint was lodged by Neerabai’s son Vishwas Bhagat (31).
