NAVI MUMBAI: A 27-year-old man was arrested by APMC police for attempted murder after he slashed a neighbour's 4-year-old daughter with a knife, causing severe injuries to her forehead and face during an altercation with his cousin sister over personal family issues.

The arrested accused was identified as Omkar Hilam, residing near Kunal Cycle Mart in Sector-21, Turbhe. Vashi JMFC court remanded him to police custody until Tuesday. The injured minor girl was treated for her injuries at Vashi NMMC Hospital and later discharged, the police informed.

As per the FIR registered by the injured minor girl's mother, Nazhatpravin Shaikh (35), on Sunday around 7.45 pm, the accused Hilam came to the house of his cousin sister, Nikita Jaiswal, who is her neighbour.

He deliberately picked a quarrel with Jaiswal, who was holding her daughter, Sirat Fatema (4), on her lap. Hilam asked Jaiswal why she brings home the kids of others to take care of. As an argument ensued between them, Hilam kicked Jaiswal in the abdomen.

As the minor girl's mother intervened to rescue Jaiswal, Hilam became enraged and, by threatening to kill the minor girl, attempted to strangle her.

While Jaiswal and the girl's mother attempted to rescue the child, the accused slashed a knife on the minor girl's forehead and face. The local residents caught Hilam and summoned the police. The APMC cops reached the spot and arrested the accused Hilam.
