'Stop concretization, aviary plan inside Vashi civic garden'

NAVI MUMBAI : The local Vashi residents and activists are strongly against certain "

developmental works

" taking place inside the landmark

Smt Meenatai Thackeray municipal garden

, opposite the mini seashore promenade, as they feel that it is a terrible waste of

civic funds

.

The locals are also planning to stage a public protest at the site to primarily highlight the heavy concretization taking place inside the

municipal garden

, along with a proposal to make an aviary at this venue where caged exotic birds will be displayed.

"Who comes up with such nonsensical plans to have an aviary inside a municipal garden? The world is already grappling with diseases like bird flu and the Covid pandemic, but in NMMC we want to waste tax payers money to construct an aviary, wherein caged birds will be put up for display. Also, there is heavy concretization taking place inside the garden, which is spoiling the natural beauty," said activist Rohitt Malhotra.

When TOI visited the garden in sector 10A, some workers were unloading freshly quarried stones, to be placed inside the garden.

"Any garden is supposed to look green, with earth and soil below, instead of a concrete floor. Who is wasting civic funds thus? Also, it requires more money to maintain and feed birds in an aviary. Why are such stupid proposals not scrapped?" said Malhotra.

When contacted, NMMC commissioner Abhijit Bangar said: "I will have to ask the officials concerned about the proposed aviary and the concretization inside the civic garden. Based on the report, we can take necessary action."
