Residents adopt newspaper, foil packets, netted bags to support plastic ban

NAVI MUMBAI: From using old newspapers instead of plastic

bags

meant for garbage

bins

to using netted bags for fresh produce, Navi Mumbai residents are taking the

plastic ban

seriously.

However, as they think up innovative ways to recycle and reuse, they are equally baffled that the ban includes cling wrap, garbage bags and such.

As the plastic ban enters its third day, many residents believe there needs to be some sort of limitation. For lack of suitable alternatives, many homes are now looking at reusable and environment-friendly options. “We have started taking our milk can to the dairy,” said Tejas Vora, a Vashi resident. With vegetable and fruit vendors also not providing bags, customers have got quite used to carrying along their shopping bag. “We take along vegetable bags, pack it individually thus making storage easier. Besides these bags can be washed and re-used,” said Jyoti Krishnamurthy, a resident of Sanpada.

Some homes have made bags from old fabric, large enough to hold a week’s buy of fruit and vegetables. “These bags are strong and sturdy and can.be washed,” said Katlyn Mistry, another Sanpada resident. With the meat and fish vendors also not providing bags, the options are foil trays, foil packets and paper containers. “The foil packets work best, nothing spills out and they can be reused and recycled. Another option is to reuse old milk packets to store fish and meat in the freezer, these work just as well in keeping the food fresh,” added Tina Joshua, a

Nerul

resident.
