NAVI MUMBAI: A 16-year-old school boy died after he allegedly shot himself in the head with his father’s licenced rifle at his residence in Mahad, Raigad district on Thursday afternoon. Prima facie, an accidental death case has been registered at Mahad city police station.

Police said that the deceased has been identified as Suyash Nagarkar, who was a Class 10 student. The boy's father Sunil Nagarkar is a goldsmith who operates a store from the ground floor of a three-storeyed building owned by him and his two brothers. Around 12.30 pm, while Nagarkar and his wife were at the shop, his son Suyash shot himself in the head. Upon hearing the firing shot, the couple rushed upstairs and found Suyash lying in a pool of blood. The rifle was found next to him. He was rushed to a hospital, where he was declared brought dead.

Raigad SP Somnath Gharge said, “During the Lok Sabha elections, Nagarkar had deposited his licenced rifle with the Raigad police. But it was returned after the elections got over. When inquired, Nagarkar claimed that his son was visibly disturbed over the past few days.”
