NAVI MUMBAI: The Panvel City Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has won third prize in the state under the category of three to 10 lakh population city in the Majhi Vasundhara Abhiyan for the year 2022-23. The state government has awarded Rs5crore to PCMC for bagging the third position in the campaign in the entire state.

Majhi Vasundhara is an initiative of the environment and climate change department of the state to create awareness among citizens about the impact of climate change and environmental issues and to encourage them to make a conscious effort towards the betterment of the environment.

The award ceremony was held at NCPA, Mumbai on World Environment Day in the presence of Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and state assembly speaker Rahul Narvekar among other ministers. An elated PCMC commissioner and administrator Ganesh Deshmukh dedicated the achievement to the residents of PCMC area for keeping the city clean and green. Under this initiative, the deserving gram panchayats, nagar panchayats, municipalities, municipal corporations, best working departments, districts and officials of the year 2022-23 were honoured with awards by the CM.

“This is a huge achievement for the citizens who are the real protectors of the city environment and it was impossible without their active support and participation. The credit also goes to people’s representative, voluntary organisations, civic employees especially from garden and sanitary departments besides the media. We have pledged to improve our standard to bag the first position in the state next time,” said Deshmukh. An official said the residents supported the civic body in clean-up exercise and anti-plastic drive besides many other environmentally friendly activities.

“We have centred our focus on creating a green zone across the city which will be the biggest protector of the environment. We have planted thousands of trees in the past couple of years. Miyawaki urban forests are being planned at various places to augment the green cover across the city. Water bodies are being renovated and beautified these days to restore the glorious past of city lakes.”
