One year after beautification, Nerul pond still lacks security measures

NAVI MUMBAI: Even though the

Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation

(

NMMC

) spent nearly Rs 17 crore in 2016 to beautify a pond adjacent to

Palm Beach Road

at Nerul, it has still not looked into the security aspects of the place. The landmark of the city comprising of amenities like an open gym, jogging track, etc, is spread over 30 acres and is fast turning into a haven for perverts, drug addicts and thugs.

On Sunday, the Nerul police had nabbed a drug addict for flashing himself in front of a woman who was at the park along with her family. ‘‘The police were able to nab the culprit only because I had taken photographs of his act. When I shared my experience in social groups I learnt that such instances have been taking place frequently because there is no security,’’ said the woman, a resident of Sector 4 in Nerul.

Besides, almost 30-odd decorative poles have been stolen from the pond area. A proposal to install CCTVs has been pending for nearly six months. Additional municipal commissioner Ankush Chavan said that they will ask speed up the instalation of CCTVs soon. — Sammera Kapoor Munshi
