Navi Mumbai: Nerul society plants a banyan tree on Independence Day

NAVI MUMBAI: A housing society in Nerul, sector 36, has planted a banyan tree sapling in their complex on the happy occasion of Independence Day. Tree lovers have welcomed this green move by Ishwar Iris CHS, since it is quite rare nowadays for anyone to plant a banyan tree, which is our national tree.

The secretary of Ishwar Iris society, Waman Kadam, said: ``The residents of our housing society wanted to plant a banyan tree and another smaller flowering tree on I-Day. Hence, we got the saplings from a tree lover in order to do so. We will now take care of these plants."

City based RTI activist, Anarjit Chauhan, commented: "I had contacted the NMMC gardens department in order to help the Nerul society members to plant the trees. It is good that the citizens are also going for big sized trees like banyan. This will encourage other societies too, to plant indigenous trees, for the sake of good environment."
