THANE: A 29-year-old man has been booked by the police in Navi Mumbai for allegedly marrying a 12-year-old girl, repeatedly sexually assaulting her, and causing her to become pregnant, according to an official on Friday.
The incident took place about six months ago and child marriage is illegal in the country.
The accused is said to have repeatedly raped the girl, resulting in her pregnancy. Both the man and the minor are originally from Satara district in Maharashtra, the official added.
The matter came to light when a local doctor in Panvel discovered during a survey on Thursday that the girl was four months pregnant. The doctor immediately informed the police.
The station house officer of Khandeshwar police station stated that a case has been filed against the man under the Indian Penal Code (IPC), Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, and the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act.
