Civic body razes illegal tin shed inside APMC complex

Navi Mumbai: The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has demolished an illegal tin shed, which was made by first cutting branches of a tree inside the grain market of APMC wholesale market complex. While civic activists have welcomed this tough action taken against the encroachment, they are also questioning the local APMC authority for not taking prompt action against such illegalities.“The encroachers had brazenly started cutting huge tree branches inside the Dana Bazaar (grain market) of the APMC complex, in order to install tin sheds and encroach the public space. This was being done for some religious event. However, damaging trees and taking over open spaces without the valid permission of the authorities is illegal,” said a Navi Mumbai-based civic activist.The NMMC ward officer of Turbhe ward, Bharat Dande, told TOI: “I asked the ward officials to take action against the illegal encroachment at the grain market area as soon as I got the complaint. The tin sheds erected at the site have been removed during the demolition.”Social activists said this is the second time within a span of 10 months that there was an attempt to encroach an open area public space within the APMC complex in Vashi. “Previously, a banyan tree and peepal tree were severely damaged by encroachers who wanted to grab an open space inside the APMC. At that time, the then NMMC commissioner Abhijit Bangar had ordered its demolition,” informed a social activist, and added that the civic body must also lodge FIRs against those who indulge in such illegalities.

The call for action was also addressed to Prime Minister Modi, Governor Pillai, and Environment Minister Yadav.

HC to Jharkhand: Take action against illegal Bangladesh migrants

Jharkhand High Court instructed the state government to promptly address the issue of illegal Bangladeshi immigrants entering through Santhal Parganas. The court suggested sudden inspections of Aadhaar and voter ID cards to identify bona fide residents. The central and state governments were urged to collaborate to tackle this problem effectively. The case will be heard next on August 22.
