Navi Mumbai: Animal activists, along with a few locals, have organized a musical street campaign at a Kamothe Navratri pandal on Sunday evening to highlight the increase in number of incidents of animal cruelty. “Through music and songs, we will try to tell the people about animal rights and how it is cruel and illegal to hit them,” said an activist, who will be attennding the event at the Dandiya venue of Adarsh Mitra Mandal in sector 18 Kamothe from 6-8 pm.
Since citizens come in large numbers for the
Navratri celebrations, the activists said that they had decided to kickstart their campaign at a Dandiya venue in order to effectively spread the animal welfare message.
A Kharghar-based animal welfare worker said that it was a good idea to have such a campaign.
Avinash Ghodke, resident, added that they found a stray dog near Gokul Diary, whose neck had been tightly tied with a wire. He added that such an event can be helpful to spread the message and sensitize citizens
Navi Mumbai-based activist Aditi Lahiri said that authorities have to ensure that there are adequate number of government recognized animal shelters in the city. “Through RTI, I found that many land plots reserved for animal welfare activities have not been properly used,” she added.
Activists have urged also citizens to call up animal helplines if they ever came across any person being cruel to stray dogs.
