A three-month review of the accounts has revealed that the transport body has shown an increase in income and their losses have declined.

The management has seen an over 9% increase in income from May to July, compared to the same period last year.

In 2015, NMMT earned Rs 8.92 crore, whereas this year the income has gone up to Rs 9.80 crore.

“There has been a change in the per km expenditure. While last year the expenditure incurred against every km was Rs 53.66, this year the loss has come down to Rs 49.17 per km,” said an official from the transport department.

The increase in revenue is being correlated to multiple factors, one of them being the management’s ability to ply maximum number of buses.

Officials informed the buses have covered over 30.41 lakh km as against the 26.85 lakh km recorded last year. Policy decisions taken by municipal commissioner Tukaram Mundhe are stated to have rendered the desired result.

“From cancelling 8 loss-making routes and introducing 5 newer routes, to taking disciplinary actions against errant staffers, the transport body’s functioning has been streamlined and this is proving to be beneficial,” an official said.

The transport body is reportedly working towards an Intelligent Transport System, whereby the information on arrival and departure of buses and number of bus stops will be made available in advance. Tickets will also be issued through smart cards.
