NAVI MUMBAI: Chief minister Eknath Shinde, who reviewed pending work on Mumbai-Goa Highway on Monday, ahead of the Ganesh Chaturthi festival, directed the Raigad superintendent of police to file a culpable homicide (not amounting to murder) case against the previous contractors who had left the work unfinished and the highway in a poor state.

Speaking to reporters at Kashedi tunnel, Shinde said, “There have been some contractors who did shoddy work. Such poor quality work resulted in road accidents and people lost their lives. Blacklisting of such contractors is not sufficient. They should face criminal charges like culpable homicide. I have given instructions to officials to file such complaints against contractors.”

The same day, Shiv Sena-UBT and Congress leaders from Raigad district showed black flags to the CM over the deplorable state of the highway after which they detained by Pen police.

Ahead of CM’s visit, contractors started filling potholes using concrete mix and road rollers. Even weed cleaning work was taken up. The 84-km stretch between Panvel and Indapur is the worst.

Sena-UBT leaders Naresh Gawand and Jagdish Thakur, and Congress leaders Nanda Mhatre and Chandrakant Patil, along with supporters, showed black flags at entry point of Pen taluka. Another group, led by UBT district president Surendra Mhatre and Vishnubhai Patil, did the same at Vashi naka. CM had directed authorities to make the highway pothole-free before Ganpati.
