NAVI MUMBAI: A chemical-laden tanker toppled sideways at Khopoli after exiting the Mumbai-Pune expressway and caught fire on Wednesday early morning.
The fire engulfed the entire tanker and as the chemical had spilled on the road, the fire spread along the periphery of the road for a distance of about 20-25 feet, informed Shital Raut, SI of Khopoli police station.
SI Raut said, "The mishap occured around 5.50 am when the tanker had reached near Shilphata in Khopoli. The tanker was loaded with spirit (ethanol) and was heading towards a liquor manufacturing company in Khopoli.
After the tanker toppled sideways, the driver immediately came out of the vehicle after which the tanker caught fire. The road was cordoned off for one km till the fire brigade rescue team from Khopoli and JSW company carried out the fire fight operation that took around 3 hours."
