NAVI MUMBAI: The Koparkhairane police are in search of a young couple, who have allegedly conned three auto drivers collectively to the tune of Rs 1.68 lakh.
The duo offered American dollars at half the prevailing market rate to the victims in exchange of Indian currency but handed over newspaper bundles wrapped in a plastic bag. The incident occurred on November 9 but a cheating case was registered at the Koparkhairane police only on Friday, as the victims tried to track the couple but failed, said sub inspector Ashok Pawar.
A young woman, who identified herself as Muskaan, befriended an auto driver Akhilesh Jaiswal, and told him that she wanted to exchange American dollars at a cheaper rate, as she urgently needed money. Jaiswal agreed to invest Rs 8,000 and roped in two more friends. They agreed to invest Rs 1.10 lakh and Rs 50,000 respectively.
The woman called Jaiswal near Balaji Tower to exchange the money. She came along with a youth at 5pm. After Jaiswal handed over the cash, they showed him the foreign currency bundle and left the bag. Later, Jaiswal found only newspaper bundles.
