NAVI MUMBAI: The directorate of technical education (DTE) asked Saraswati Engineering College in Kharghar to refund the late fee imposed on students after they complained that it was illegal. The college allegedly charged a fine of Rs 100 per day as late fee along with admission fees from several students.

The DTE sent a letter to the college two days ago. “The imposition of fine is illegal as per the norms and the department has asked the college to refund it immediately to the students. If the college continues charging the fine, the department will take action against the college under the Maharashtra Educational Institutions (Prohibition of Capitation Fee) Act, 1987,” said Pramod Naik, joint director, DTE

Out of around 3000 odd students, around 700-800 who failed to pay the fee within deadline were charged late fines.
