MUMBAI: The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has arrested Zahid Ali alias Javed, a resident of Ghansoli in Navi Mumbai, for fraudulently claiming export incentives of Rs 52 crore.
The DRI in March had arrested Navi Mumbai businessman Sunil Kalgutkar. During the probe it came to light that the syndicate was procuring cheap carpets and garments from India by showing inflated purchase bills to get duty drawback benefits.
Investigations into the export found that Kalgutkar was instrumental in procuring silk, garments and exporting them through 20 companies by showing overvalued exports.
Zahid said he arranged the import export codes to carry out exports.
Ravi Hirani, advocate for Zahid, told the court his client was innocent.
