NAVI MUMBAI: Students of Father Agnel School, Vashi, won the under-19 inter school girls’ basketball tournament held at Nagpur recently. Three players, Sakshi Kotian, Saloni Sathe and Yukta Chavan have also been selected to represent Maharashtra in the upcoming nationals.
“It’s been a historic moment for us that we have been picked for the nationals to make our debut,” said the champion trio.
Agnel, which represented Mumbai, beat Auragabad girls with a 46-15 score in the quarter finals. Agnel then overpowered Kolhapur in the semi finals with a 55-26 score and beat the host, Nagpur in a 61-56 victory in the finals. Darshana Kumar, scored 14 goals in the finals, while Ishita Surve scored 21 goals in the semi finals.
“The boys’ team has won state tournaments for four consecutive seasons. The girls have won the state level tournament for the first time. This victory has motivated them to achieve even bigger goals,” said Agnel coach, D K Mali.
According to Ravi Nair, Agnel’s sports chief, the team played like an invincible force and overpowered the opponents in every department. “Ishita Surve, Sakshi Kotian, Darshana Kumar, Saloni Sathe and Yukta Chavan played a stellar role in this victory,” he added.
