Nashik: A woman and her seven-year-old daughter were killed in a
road accident after they were hit by a speeding container on the Dwarka flyover around 6.30 am on Tuesday.
The deceased have been identified as 29-year-old Nafita Shaikh, and her daughter Tarannum Shaikh.
The Panchavati police said Afzal Shaikh, a truck driver from Gaulane, which is 14km from Nashik city, was transporting some material to Dhule.
His wife and three daughters were accompanying him.
Around 6.30 am, as the family was proceeding towards the Dhule from the Dwarka flyover, Shaikh stopped on the flyover to tighten the ropes around the articles he was carrying. His wife and daughters also came out of the truck. Just then, the driver of a speeding container, who apparently did not spot the stationary truck, rammed his vehicle into it.
The Panchavati police said the container driver and the trucker’s family suffered serious injuries in the accident. The woman and one of her daughters were declared brought dead at the hospital.
The traffic police and the Panchavati police rushed to the incident spot to ensure that there was no traffic jam on the flyover. Senior police officers said the container driver may have dozed off and that may be the reason why he failed to spot the stationary truck and the trucker’s family.
The flyover from Dwarka towards Jatra Hotel has only two lanes on one side of the road. If any vehicle is parked or halted there, it leaves just one lane space for other vehicles.
The police said the condition of the other injured people is stable. After examining the case, a complaint will be registered.
