Nashik: Two brothers, aged 18 and 14, drowned in a water-filled quarry at Teegaon village, in Sangamner taluka of Ahilyanagar district, on Friday afternoon.
The deceased, who belonged to a farming family, have been identified as Mahesh Sanap (18) and Omkar (14).
Inspector Pravin Salunkhe, of the Sangamner taluka police station, said the two brothers had gone to the quarry near their house for a swim. According to the police, several local youths from Teegaon frequently visit the quarry to cool off and beat the heat.
On Friday, the two brothers had gone to the quarry as usual. However, they apparently misjudged the depth of the water and drowned while attempting to save each other, the police said.
Village sarpanch, Dnyaneshwar Sanap, was informed of the incident, after which he went to the spot with a group of villagers and retrieved the boys from the water. Although they were immediately taken to the rural hospital at Ghulewadi, the doctors there declared them brought dead, the police said.
The Sangamner taluka police have registered a case of accidental death.
